Even as the industrial revolution of the 1800s forever altered the United States' productive capacity, most industrial workers still found themselves pulling 60 hour weeks, at a minimum. That began to change in 1886, as a movement of trade unionists and workers emerged to demand an eight hour day— "eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what you will," went their slogan.
